Judy (Benson) Kuhn has been selected as the 2024 Heart of the Community Grand Marshal for her never-ending commitment to helping make the Waldron community an even better place to live. Judy grew up in Waldron, is a Waldron alumnus, and is a life-long resident of the area. She and her husband, Steve, farm and have three sons and eight grandchildren. Judy was a long-time teacher’s assistant and bus driver for Waldron Schools, retiring in 2023. She is still involved at school as a substitute teacher. In her spare time, Judy is a member of the Waldron Junior-Senior High School Alumni Association, the Waldron Hometown Committee, the Wall of Honor Committee, the Grover Center Museum Board, Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Shelby County Extension Homemakers. She also attends Zion Evangelical Church where she is involved with the Golden Rule Class and the Laundry Love and Bread and Blessings missions.

Judy is a true Waldron treasure who bleeds blue and white. She can be found cheering proudly at many Mohawk events throughout the year.

Legacy: Max Kelley

Max Kelley has been selected as one of our Legacy Grand Marshals for 2024. Mr. Kelley, as we all knew him in school, is a Waldron graduate and lifelong resident of our community. Mr. Kelley graduated from Franklin College and embarked on a 40 year teaching career. He started at Noble Township School where he taught for three years and was also the principal for a year. For the next 37 years, Mr. Kelley taught science and biology. Does anyone else remember taking panels of notes and dissecting frogs and fetal pigs? At Waldron, Mr. Kelley coached 9th grade basketball, track, and cross country. He started the women’s cross country team at WHS and coached a state champion! He also served as the Waldron Little League director for fourteen years.

Mr. Kelley and his wife, Ruth, have three sons and two grandchildren. Mr. Kelley enjoys time with his grandkids, community events, and gardening. Mr. Kelley is a staple of the Waldron Community and has left an impressive legacy at Waldron High School.

Legacy: Larry Skinner

Larry Skinner has also been selected as one of our Legacy Grand Marshals for 2024. Mr. Skinner graduated from Filmore High School, Indiana University with a bachelor’s degree, and DePauw University with a master’s degree. Before becoming a Waldron Mohawk, Mr. Skinner taught one year at Eminence High School and two years at Jac-Cen-Del High School. He then spent 23 years teaching health, PE, and history at Waldron Junior-Senior High Schools, before retiring in 1998. Mr. Skinner also coached golf, men's and women's basketball, and baseball at Waldron.

Mr. Skinner and his wife, Mary have several children, grand children, and great grandchildren. Mr. Skinner enjoys keeping up with his former students and athletes on Facebook as well as attending his great grandchildren’s athletic events. You may also see him from time to time at a Waldron basketball game, especially if they are playing against Jac-Cen-Del.

Mr. Skinner left a long legacy behind when he retired from Waldron. Do you remember square dancing in PE with Mr. Beeson calling the steps? Who all played basketball, baseball, or golf for Mr. Skinner? If you are on Facebook, I’m betting that he proudly keeps up on who you have grown to be since graduation.

Fun fact - Mr. Skinner used to be a professional fastpitch softball player back in the day and he traveled the country to play!
